Alternative Anxiety Therapies

Evidence has shown that there are alternative anxiety therapies that lie outside the realm of conventional medicine.  These alternative anxiety therapies are effective in the treatment of  anxiety disorders, particularly when used in conjunction with conventional anxiety treatments. There are a number of alternative anxiety therapies that exist to treat anxiety.

Relaxation Techniques

One of the most effective short-term alternative anxiety therapies is the use of relaxation techniques.  This is an ideal way to manage anxiety, particularly when it has been caused by stress in a person’s life, whether that stress comes from a chronic or life-threatening health problem, a death in the family, or another source.  Relaxation techniques are particularly effective alternative anxiety therapies in older adults, although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is still more effective for long-term treatment of anxiety disorders.

Yoga has been proven effective in terms of alternative anxiety therapies.  Yoga combines gentle body movement with meditation, breathing exercises, and a specific life philosophy.  The practice of yoga and other forms of exercise work as alternative anxiety therapies because they can help reduce blood pressure and heart rate and help the body release neurotransmitters and other chemicals that will help lessen the effects of anxiety.

Meditation is one of the alternative anxiety therapies that has been practiced for thousands of years.  It has been shown to have a positive effect on anxiety disorders.  During meditation, it is possible to bring the mind into a deep state of relaxation, which helps calm the mind and reduce stress.  Meditation is also known to continue to have an effect after the meditation session is over, helping maintain a sense of calm.  It is one of the alternative anxiety therapies that can be done anywhere.

Supplements can be used when looking for alternative anxiety therapies.  One of these supplements is kava, which is one of the alternative anxiety therapies that come in plant form.  Kava is a plant that is native to the South Pacific and has been proven as a safe and effective anxiety treatment.  It boosts mood and lessens anxiety and can be taken in the form of a tablet. In addition to kava, there are other plants and vitamins that can help treat anxiety, including vitamin B12, chamomile, inositol, fish oil, valerian root, and St. John’s wort.

Acupuncture is another of the alternative anxiety therapies that has been practiced for thousands of years.  Acupuncture stems from China and involves the insertion of needles into particular points on the body in order to manipulate the flow of energy through the body.  This form of alternative anxiety treatment has become more popular in recent years.

While it is worth investigating and trying alternative anxiety therapies, it is important not to let them take the place of conventional anxiety treatments.  Therapy and medication are still critical in most cases.  It is also important, in addition to any alternative anxiety treatments and treatments prescribed by your doctor, to ensure that you are eating a healthy diet full of fresh, whole foods and getting enough sleep.  Always consult with your doctor to ensure you are getting the proper anxiety treatment and add your alternative anxiety therapies to supplement the treatments your doctor prescribes.
